Lichen simplex chronicus (LSC; also known as neurodermatitis circumscripta) is characterized by lichenification of the skin that is induced by chronic rubbing and/or scratching. LSC can be associated with atopic dermatitis. However, often the itching is of an unknown cause. Individual papules may be observed as well (prurigo nodularis).

LSC of the vulva is associated with habitual rubbing and scratching of the area. LSC is worse with heat, humidity, and the use of sanitary napkins. Contact dermatitis plays a role, especially irritant contact dermatitis, from overwashing and scrubbing. The dryness accompanying genitourinary syndrome of menopause may also be an initiating factor. LSC can complicate vulvar candidiasis, lichen sclerosus, lichen planus, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, differentiated vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), and squamous cell carcinoma. Secondary infection with bacteria can occur. LSC is a chronic disorder that often affects older individuals, but involvement of the vulval area can occur throughout adulthood.
