Synopsis
Nummular headache, also known as coin-shaped headache, is a chronic headache disorder consisting of pain in a small, circumscribed area of the scalp. It is a relatively rare disorder, with an estimated incidence of 6.4 / 100 000 per year. The average age of onset is in the 40s, but it can occur in any age group. This disorder is slightly more common in females compared to males, with a ratio of 1:6 to 1.
The cause is unknown, but it is thought to be a focal neuralgia or an injury / inflammation of the epicranial tissues. Underlying structural lesions, including dermatologic lesions, need to be excluded.
